Whether we were in the Central Highlands,
the DMZ, or the steamy jungles of the Mekong Delta, we would always
hold onto the dream of an R&R. Some of us were actually lucky
enough to get to go. Although home was where we really wanted to go,
the R&R was as good as we could get. It was the first real break we
would get, and many wild dreams were concocted in the field of "Wine,
Women, and Song" while waiting for your turn to come up. Well, sometimes
it actually happened that way, but most of the time we were just happy
to kick back and get some rest, and see what clean clothes felt
like again.
Whatever activity the R&R was to bring,
however, the writing of a letter home was most often first on the list
of things to do.
The letter usually began:
Dear Mom..............
This photo was taken at the Imperial Hotel
in Saigon, South Vietnam, 1966.
The fellow started writing even before
he changed clothes!
Dear Mom........
