Life on the Mekong  # 6507
Humanity
and Geography
of a Nation
At War

As we flew through the jungle,  we would see sights that made us glad we lived where we did!  The houses along the rivers in Vietnam were all hand made from  whatever scraps of wood and material they could find.
The thatched roof was the norm.
From the back of each house was a ramp that dropped to the river and literally provided life to the people of the river.  This ramp served as a boat dock, the laundry room (no automatic washers here!),  a place to bathe, a place to fish, and of course the "bathroom".
The trick was to find a spot and build as far upstream as possible.  Building as far upstream as posible not because of sanitary considerations, but , after all,
the fishing was better!
